Whether you are visiting Montrose for the first time or looking at making Montrose your home, we invite you to discover Montrose. Montrose is a terrific community full of spirit, splendor, and a quality of life most people dream about. The people are friendly, the views are magnificent, and there is always something unique and entertaining to do.
Montrose County is home to an exceptional combination of people who enjoy every kind of activity. Estimated population of Montrose City is 133,019 and Montrose County is 33,432.
Montrose is situated in the Uncompahgre Valley at an elevation of 5,794 feet. This city is surrounded by the 14,000-foot San Juan Mountains to the south, the 10,000-foot Uncompahgre Plateau to the west, the Grand Mesa to the north and the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park to the east. These surrounding high mountain barriers afford the valley uniformity of weather and lower wind velocity than other portions of Colorado. Most winds occur during the months of April and early May with the prevailing wind from the southwest. Montrose residents enjoy mild summers and winters and an average of 227 to 274 days of sunshine each year. There is usually minimal snow accumulation in the area of the city. The semi-arid environment maintains a low relative humidity, low average precipitation, and a clear and pure air quality year round.
Montrose and the surrounding area lend itself to a variety of activities year around. For the outdoor enthusiast you will find camping in some of the most beautiful countryside, cross-country skiing, amazing four wheel drive trails, hiking, fishing, golfing, mountain biking, snowmobiling, hunting and close proximity to 4 downhill ski resorts. For those who prefer to take life a little easier, Montrose has a fantastic selection of dining, and unique shopping. For those that enjoy the arts, why not take in a play at the Magic Circle Theatre, or spend an evening with the Valley Symphony? We also need to mention that Montrose is home to one of our country's newest National Parks - The Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Even after numerous visits, its beauty continues to amaze us.
In addition to the many activities Montrose has to offer, you will also discover a community with great business opportunities, a newly remodeled full service hospital, a regional airport, a wonderful new library, an expanding college, and educational system that take pride in our students, a history rich in agriculture, and a strong economy.
The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is a great place to rejuvenate the soul. It also offers thrilling adventures, if that's more your style. The 30,033-acre national park offers a variety of outdoor activities including rock climbing, hiking, camping and world-class fishing. Outside the National Park, the Gunnison Gorge Conservation Area is open to hunting, hiking, off road vehicles, camping, whitewater rafting and horseback riding.
